Over 8% of takeaway fish mislabelled say MSC
A Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) study using DNA testing found there was a marked improvement in mislabelling of fish from fish and chip shops. This is compared to a study by consumer organisation Which? from 2012 which found one in six fish (16%) were mislabelled.
The research found that fish and chip shops without a Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certificate are five times more likely to serve the wrong species to their customers. Conducted as part of regular MSC authentication tests, the study revealed fish mislabelling at a rate of just 1.64% in shops with an MSC certificate, compared to over 8% in a parallel sample of the nearest non-certified shops. The MSC tests also show that British chippies are ahead of the global seafood mislabelling rate of 30%.
Professor Chris Elliott, founder of the Institute of Global Food Security (IGFS), comments, “It’s reassuring that the level of fish mislabelling in the UK is much lower than other reported regions in the world. However, the fact that the MSC certified shops performed so much better is a clear indication of the importance of the programme. Not only does it help assure customers of the sustainability of their fish but also that they are getting what they’ve paid for.”
Plymouth island to get £10m hotel resort
The development of a luxury hotel resort on Drake’s Island has been given the go-ahead by Plymouth City Council.
Following 20 years of legal debate, the council has now signed a deal with Rotolok, the owners of the island which lies in the Plymouth Sound. A colony of roosting birds which had held up the project are being moved to nearby Mount Edgcumbe.
Rotolok are now expected to start developing the resort and offering public tours.
Councillor Bill Stevens said: “Drake’s Island is a vital piece of Plymouth’s heritage and we feel we are guardians and trustees for future generations. We have a responsibility to Plymothians of the future to get this right.”
Italian independent opens in Cheltenham
Fat Toni’s in Cheltenham’s Regent Street will be the third location for the Italian pizza restaurant and takeaway. Run by brothers Darren and Jason Orsi, it already has takeaways in Gloucester and Stroud.
The eatery is known for its giant 20-inch pizzas, designed to be shared and they also offer vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
As well as pizzas, the new restaurant will offer salads, antipastos and desserts to its sit-down diners.
Wildlife friendly food project
Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust are launching its Friendly Food Project for emerging food producers to promote wildlife-friendly food that is also ethically and sustainably produced.
The initiative gives producers the chance to sell their food and drink at its Crickley Hill café near Birdlip. They will be selected and showcased on the menu every month. A wildlife-friendly activity pack for children will also be available.
Producers who have been selected for their wildlife-friendly stance include: The Cotswold Farmer, Bensons the Juicers, Cotteswold Dairy, Day’s Cottage, Wolfy’s, Jess’s Ladies Organic, Taynton Farm Foods, The Artisan Kitchen, The Severn Project and Yum Yum Fine Foods.
Highbullen joins Bespoke Hotels Collection
The four-AA star Highbullen Hotel, Golf & Country Club in Devon has joined the Bespoke group of independent boutique hotels. It will retain its current family ownership while gaining Bespoke’s management and operations support.
Highbullen dates back to 1879, has 37 bedrooms and is set in a 127-acre estate with views across the Mole Valley and Exmoor. The current owner, Frank Chapman, bought it out of administration over four years ago and has invested £10m in renovations including upgrading the Victorian gothic manor house.
The Bespoke Hotels Collection comprises more than 200 properties. Nick Turner, managing director, said: “We are delighted to have entered into this arrangement with Highbullen, a property of huge potential in a fantastic location.”
North Devon restaurant nets first MSC certification
The Pelican Fish and Chips in Barnstaple are the first in the area to be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). They can now use the MSC ‘blue tick’ label on its cod, haddock, plaice, Greenland prawns and Cornish hake assuring customers that the fish sold has been responsibly caught using sustainable methods.
Owner Martin James said: “We’ve wanted to be MSC certified since we became aware of the programme. It’s really important to us that we can eat and sell our fish with a clear conscience and encourage our customers to do the same. We’re really pleased to be able to offer the information needed to make an informed, sustainable choice. It’s good to know that by choosing MSC, we and our customers are helping to protect the marine environment and future generations who will rely on it.”
George Clark, UK Commercial Manager at the MSC, adds, “It’s great to see one of the top chippies in the country, like The Pelican, prioritising sustainability by becoming MSC certified. They understand that sustainability is fast becoming a top consideration for fish lovers. They’re offering a great service to their customers by providing a good menu choice that includes four MSC certified seafood species – which has a really positive impact on the health of the oceans.”
Three start-ups join for virtual restaurant walkthroughs
Three IT companies in Southampton have joined forces to offer interactive walkthroughs to restaurants and hotels.
Josh Mitchell, the 22-year-old business development director at 360 Dynamic, which uses 360-degree technology to create virtual tours of buildings, hooked up with online marketing company Yuno Media and Stolen Images, a video and media production firm.
According to a spokesman, their 360-degree walkthroughs on smartphone, tablet or PC allow customers to “check out what a participating restaurant looks like and even ‘pick up’ the food or drinks price menu.”
The three start-ups all work in the Ocean Village Innovation Centre in Southampton.
Rob Greenberg, the centre manager, said: “It’s great to see these three start-ups joining forces and pooling their know-how to create superb interactive tours.”

The South Devon Chilli Farm are lowering the heat with their new Cool Jalapeno salsa. As well as using it as a dip with chips, the producers also recommend trying it as “a pasta sauce, a pizza topping, with cheese and crackers or with eggs.”

Wadworth’s new look bottled beer
The Devizes-based brewer has revealed a fresh look for its bottled beer range, following the relaunch of its flagship 6X ale with the ‘Old Cool is the New Cool’ campaign.
Wadworth say they have seen sales of their ale double in supermarkets in the past year.
The rebrand sees all seven of Wadworth beer in bottles get new look labelling which “pep up their appearance whilst retaining the feel of Wadworth’s unique heritage”, according to the company.
Elaine Beckett, head of marketing and communications at Wadworth, said: “We have over 100 years of knowledge and experience in craft brewing and have always moved with the times while retaining our brand heritage. The new look and feel is reflective of our status as a genuine original craft brewer that continue to cater for our original beer drinkers, but looks to target an emerging market of younger beer drinkers.”
Lyme Bay adds sparkle
The Lyme Bay Winery are adding two new sparkling wines to its portfolio to “meet growing consumer demand for premium English wines.”
The new Lyme Bay Blanc de Noirs and Lyme Bay Sparkling Rosé join their existing Classic Cuvée and Brut Reserve.
James Lambert, Managing Director of Lyme Bay Winery, says: “We’ve had an incredible response to our Classic Cuvée and Brut Reserve and the introduction of these two new sparkling wines is an exciting step forward for Lyme Bay.”
Lyme Bay Blanc de Noirs is made using 100% Pinot Noir grapes and is described as “a serious wine which will appeal to the discerning wine audience”. The Rosé is “made by the assemblage method, which involves blending a small portion of Pinot Noir red wine with Lyme Bay’s Blanc de Noir cuvée base wine.”
