St Austell Brewery is West of England Business of the Year.
St Austell Brewery was crowned 2017 West of England Business of Year, for businesses with a turnover of more than £30m.
The award, sponsored by PwC, judges companies on their “commitment to the communities they work in, the environment and their workforces” as well as profitability and business management.
The independent judges hailed the company’s sustainable growth, the acquisition of Bath Ales, product diversifications, and continued investment back into the business, including new brewing technologies.
They also highlighted St Austell’s innovations including the launch of a 330ml can of Tribute to be served to British Airways customers – potentially reaching up to 27 million passengers – and the installation of the Small Batch Brewery to help meet the demand for new beer styles and flavours.
St Austell Brewery CEO James Staughton commented: “We are enormously proud to have been picked as winners from such an outstanding group of finalists. The testing criteria for the PwC awards are what make them so prestigious, and they also serve to highlight the amazing standard of businesses operating across the South West at all levels. It is a very real honour for all of us at the company to see our efforts recognised and rewarded amongst such great competition.”
Nick Morgan, PwC’s head of tax in the West region and chair of the Judges said: “St Austell Brewery has seen turnover increase by 44.5% to over £153m. The Brewery, which employs over 1,400 staff, also impressed award judges with its training facility, planned new Exeter-based chef academy and successful apprenticeship scheme.
“I would personally like to congratulate St Austell and all the 2017 award finalists. This year’s competition saw a diverse range of businesses, showing the strength and breadth of the businesses here on our doorstep in the West of England”.
Cotteswold Dairy, one of the largest independent, family run dairies in the UK, was a fellow finalist in the ‘Over £30m turnover’ category.

Soil Association pilots organic food tracking tech
Soil Association Certification has teamed up with start-up tech firm Provenance to pilot blockchain technology which tracks the journey of organic food from farm to shop shelf, the first such trial in the UK.
The pilot uses Near Field Communications (NFC) technology, the same as is used in public transit passes like London’s Oyster card. This means shoppers with NFC-enabled smart phones will be able to access information on a product’s journey and organic credentials, no app required. NFC on the product packaging and shop shelf along with barcode and QR code means Provenance’s blockchain based technology will bring the ‘story’ of a product’s organic certification to the point of sale. Shoppers will be able to see information including the certification’s validity, the organic criteria met by the product, a map of its journey, and even photographs from the farm.
Jessi Baker, CEO and Founder of Provenance, says: “We’re excited to be working with Soil Association Certification to create the world’s first digital certification mark, with key verified data and batches of product stored on the blockchain. Provenance exists to help us all be able to shop with confidence knowing we are buying authentic food that matches our values. Our tech brings an easy, secure and trustworthy digital dimension to our food and drinks. When you look for products certified by the Soil Association, you know you are looking at a mark to trust and that the food meets the highest standards, now and in the future.”
Clare McDermott, Business Development Director at Soil Association Certification, says: “We’re delighted to pioneer this technology in the UK for food as it should be. Today’s shoppers are not just more conscious of their health and wellbeing, but of how to get information that tells them that what they’re buying supports these values. Consumer mistrust of supply chains is a key issue to address in today’s food retail, so we’re thrilled to see blockchain technology working with organic supply chains to give consumers full transparency when they see the Soil Association organic symbol. Customers who interact with the digital mark can find out more about what it means to be organic, something we know has been confusing in the past. This makes it even easier for consumers to make informed decisions about what food systems and businesses they support, setting the precedent for the future of food.
The technology will be piloted on packets of Eversfield Organics bacon on sale in select As Nature Intended stores from 6th September as part of Organic September.
