New record for inbound tourism set in July
VisitBritain report that July was the highest month ever for inbound tourism to the UK since official records began in 1961.
There were four million overseas visits to the UK in July, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics. This made it the first month to break through the four million mark and was up 6 percent on the same month last year. It was also the best month for spending on record; overseas visitors spent £2.8 billion in the UK. Strong growth was seen in visits from North America with a record 650,000 visits, a 9 percent rise from last year.
Tourism Minister John Glen said: “Tourism is a major economic force that creates jobs and drives growth for the whole of the country. These record figures show the continued strength of this important sector and the UK’s global position as a must-visit destination.”
VisitBritain Director Patricia Yates said: “This sustained growth demonstrates Britain’s continued ability to compete internationally for visitors and shows that tourism, one of our most valuable export industries, is an increasingly important driver of economic growth across our nations and regions.”
The Office for National Statistics figures brought the total number of overseas visits to the UK from January to July this year to 23.1 million, up 8% on the same period last year. Spending by visitors during this period hit a record £13.3 billion, up 9% on the same period last year.
There were 2.9 million overseas visits from North America from January to July, up 21% on the same period last year.
There were 15.1 million overseas visits from EU countries, the UK’s largest visitor-generating region, 4% up on last year.
Visits from the ‘Rest of the World’, which includes Australia, China, the Gulf markets and India, were up to a record 3.6 million from January to July this year, up 18% on the same period last year.

South West wins top honours at AA Hospitality Awards
South West business won three major accolades at the annual AA Hospitality Awards, announced in a ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on 25th September.
Hotel of the Year England went to The Gainsborough Bath Spa in Bath. The judges described staying in the Grade II Listed, five-star hotel which has exclusive access to the city’s natural thermal waters as a “sophisticated and luxurious experience.”
Andrew Brownsword Hotels were named AA Hotel Group of the Year 2017-18 in recognition of achieving the “very highest standards across service, food and accommodation throughout all its properties.”
Founded in 1994, this collection of 13 privately-owned UK hotels comprises seven properties located in the countryside, five city centre Abode hotels and Sydney House Chelsea.
Andrew Brownsword commented: “In creating our collection, we chose to acquire each property on the basis that we not only love the location but also have a real desire to provide the highest of standards in comfort and care. Our dedicated teams care about the service they give, proven time and again when our guests return, and this award is fantastic recognition for all their efforts, for which I warmly thank and congratulate them”.
Pub of the Year, England went to The Bell at Ramsbury, Wiltshire. AA inspectors said it was “An inn with a lot to offer – including comfy rooms, a welcoming bar and a café.”
Matt Saxton, manager of The Bell, said: “To receive the AA Award for the Best Pub in England is an amazing achievement. This is a trying time for the catering industry, and I’m incredibly proud of how my team has shone through it all. I am also really thankful to all of our guests that have supported us, and our owners that have backed our ideas to make our estate greater. Watch this space, there is lots more to come.”
Now in its 20th year, the awards also marked the release of the 2018 editions of the AA’s range of lifestyle guides; the AA Hotel Guide and the AA Best Restaurants Guide.
St Austell brings iconic Falmouth pub “back to life”
Following a nine-month restoration program and a multi-million-pound investment, St Austell Brewery have reopened the Chain Locker pub and hotel in Falmouth, Cornwall.
Cardiff-based Design Management Partnership (DMP) were appointed by St Austell Brewery to design and project manage the refurbishment. They photographed and catalogued every detail in the seventeenth-century bar and stored historical items so they could replace them after the work was carried out.
As construction work started, it became apparent that the building was in danger of complete collapse. DMP director Steve Peacock said: “Express permission had to be sought from the local authority listed building officer and English Heritage to take large sections of the building apart and rebuild them from scratch to save the site. This became a huge challenge for the design team and the contractors and, of course, required a sizeable financial commitment from the owners, St Austell Brewery.”
As well as extensive renovation work in the bar, the upper floor of the building has been restored to create a fully accessible restaurant and oyster bar with private eating rooms and covered balcony area overlooking the historic quay. Additionally, there are six new bedrooms at the water’s edge offering coastal views.
CAD Heritage Director Sam Mayou said: “One of our main instructions from the Brewery was to ensure that we didn’t lose the look and feel of the original bar area and all the positive feedback we have received so far tells us we got it right. As a team, not only have we given back to the people of Falmouth one of their most iconic drinking spots, but we have given the whole site a new lease of life for more people and future generations to enjoy.”
St Austell Brewery Retail Director Steve Worrall commented: “The potential for this site was always clear to us, but I don’t think anyone could have been prepared for the sheer scale of the works needed to bring the building back to life…We know how much the pub means to the town and the local people and the amazing response we have had so far from those who have visited the site is all the reward we need for our efforts.”
