INDUSTRY NEWS

Bristol hoteliers want Airbnb exclusion zone
The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) is calling on Bristol City Council to introduce exclusion zones for short-term Airbnb-style lets in the city centre.
Imran Ali, chairman of the BHA, believes “Bristol is being much too slow with regard to the regulation and policing of what has become a global phenomenon.” He says the result is that over 2,0000 listings are being offered to visitors with no fire regulations or the need to pay VAT and business rates.
The hotelier’s head now wants exclusion zones to be placed across the city and local residents to have the option and authority to block any properties or rooms from being offered in the street in which they live.
Imran said: “Not only do these properties not pay business rates but lack the required level of fire, health and safety standards.
“I imagine as well, many landlords who still have a mortgage have not declared that they are leasing out their property to their lender and would be in breach of their mortgage agreement. If you haven’t told your mortgage lender that you are letting out your property it also invalidates your insurance.”
He added: “We’re happy for competition however it has to be on a level playing field. If nothing is done, hotels and B&Bs will suffer.
“It goes without saying that the local job market will also see a decline due to less services being needed.  And finally, let’s not forget that the council will then start to lose income from the tax they currently receive from these legitimate businesses.”

John Burton-Race Resigns
Former Michelin-starred celebrity chef John Burton-Race has resigned from his role as group executive head chef consultant at the Richardson Hotel Group.
The announcement comes twenty months after Richardson Hotel Group rebranded The Grosvenor hotel in Torquay into the John Burton-Race Restaurant with Rooms and undertook a large-scale refurbishment.
Burton-Race, who has held two Michelin stars (Quat’Saisons, L’Ortolan, the New Angel), and has 35 years of professional chef experience, said: “I am saddened that I have had to make the decision to leave the group, but I am excited about finding my next venture and look forward to seeing what the future holds for me. I have shown that I can rebuild an average restaurant into a fine dining establishment within a short space of time – if I am given the opportunity and the backing’’
The Richardson Hotel Group stated that the John Burton-Race Restaurant with Rooms will now be rebranded.

Wadworth revamps pub websites
Wadworth Brewery has revamped the websites for all of its 55 managed pubs in time for the summer season. Visitors can now book tables and accommodation online, view up to date menus and see different areas of the pub.
CEO for Wadworth, Chris Welham said, “We have a fantastic selection of high-quality pubs in the West Country and these new websites really show off what they have to offer to local and international visitors.  Its imperative that the websites showcase what’s on offer in a simple and interactive way and our new sites do just that”.

Stroud Brewery launches £300,000 crowdfunding plan
Organic beer producer, Stroud Brewery, are launching a bond offer to raise £300,000 to fund relocation and expansion plans.
Working with sustainable banking pioneer Triodos Bank, investors will become members of the  Stroud Brewery Beer Club for the period of the bond and get a 10% discount on beer purchases. The brewery will use the funds for their relocation to a new, expanded site 400 yards from their present home in Thrupp, outside Stroud. The new location will include a taproom bar, greater capacity for beer production and storage and feature heat reclamation and solar electricity.
Greg Pilley, Managing Director of Stroud Brewery commented: “This is a significant development for Stroud Brewery and will provide us with the platform to take the business to the next stage. There is no way we could have imagined this six years ago when we moved into our existing site.”
“When we first started talking about this project we wanted to ensure that sustainability was at the core of the build and accommodate an ecologically designed brewery giving us a strong identity, a visitor destination and a vibrant community space. This crowdfunding campaign will give our customers further opportunities to invest in the brewery’s sustainable practices such as rainwater capture and solar photovoltaic panels.”
Dan Hird, head of the Triodos Corporate Finance team says: “We have been impressed with the management team and their commitment to sustainability through the whole supply chain. It is a great fit with Triodos given our existing support for the organic food & farming sector. We are committed to helping people make a positive impact with their money, through saving and investing. With this bond offer, people can invest directly into a local and organic business which helps people make a positive choice with their spending as well.”
